Largo do Rossio n.º 18 - B, R/C Esq. 7645-310 Vila Nova de Milfontes AMI 8081 Val. 01/02/2011
Vila Nova de Milfontes is a small historical alentejo town with lots of characteristic curiosities. Located in the municipality of Odemira of the Alentejo, at the mouth of the river Mira (on which, just centuries ago, the Celtics, Greeks, Romans and Arabs passed through), in the center of the nationalpark 'Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina'. This lovely coastal town is very popular, especially among Portuguese, who enjoy spending their free weekends and holidays here.
Vila Nova de Milfontes is a fishermanstown with a close connection to the sea and a place where you can still enjoy the lovely nature; extensive levels, beautiful abandoned beaches, crystal clear water and virgin dunes. Contrary to the coastal area, the interior consists mostly of typical alentejo levels with old corkoaks and other beautiful scenery which this region of Portugal has to offer.
Two of the most important moments of the Milfontes history are displayed at the townsquare "Largo Brito Pais". First the fort (nowadays part of a hotel), build by order of D. João IV, to prevent attacks from the riverside and second the monument of a risky journey by airplane in 1924 from Milfontes to Macau, a tribute to the aviators Brito Pais, Sarmento de Beires en Manuel Gouveia.
The smooth climat, the outstanding architecture, the aletejo gastronomy, the variety of sightseeings and the ideal possibilies to relax is what makes this region a visit worthwile!
